Bootleg Canyon is a mountain bike trail system on the edge of Boulder City, southeast of Las Vegas. The City of Boulder City runs it and lists more than 36 miles of trail. The city describes the lower trails as good for beginners, while the upper trails and the downhill lines are technical. To ride the downhills, you either push your bike up or take a shuttle.

The rules

The city posts a short list of rules for the trails, and two matter most for visitors:

  • Helmets are mandatory.
  • Only Class 1 e-bikes are allowed. That’s pedal assist with no throttle. Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes aren’t permitted on the trails.

The city’s rules also limit shuttle vehicles to 10 mph on the road to the top. Stay on the marked trails. The desert here recovers slowly, and the city can close trails that get cut.

The shuttle is closed

Bootleg Canyon Shuttles, at 1027 Canyon Road, lists its service as closed and says to watch for a reopening. When it ran, the posted prices were $10 per run or $30 for the day, with private shuttles available. Until it reopens, plan to climb. The climbing trails are rocky and exposed, so give yourself more time and water than the distance suggests.

When to ride

Bootleg Canyon has no shade. From late spring through early fall, ride at first light or not at all. Our heat guide has the monthly normals and the warning signs of heat illness.

Rentals and repairs nearby

All Mountain Cyclery has a Boulder City shop at 1601 Boulder City Parkway and a second store at 8670 W Sunset Rd in Las Vegas. The shop’s site offers bike rentals and service, and the Boulder City store is in the same town as the trails. Call (702) 453-2453 before you go to check what’s available.

Combine it with a road ride
